The campaign Slotmob The Economy of Francesco begins: an initiative of economic democracy and civil protest.

In recent years, in Italy, a movement has come to life and has grown within civil society that calls for a radical change of direction on the current management of gambling, which is adhered to by associations, local authorities and ordinary citizens. The reason is clear and evident: the negative consequences of this phenomenon from an economic, social, health and urban planning point of view are there for all to see. Like all complex phenomena, the resolution of the gambling phenomenon calls for serious reflection to try to stop it, to identify the propulsive centre of the entire system to try to seriously challenge it.

Usually, the rhetoric of illegal gambling is used to promote ‘legal’ gambling, leaving aside all attention to the consequences that such an activity produces on a social and health level and in people’s lives. Gambling is not a game and it is never good. All gambling is pathological, toxic, addictive, captures the most fragile, consumes the poor for profit, pollutes the land, makes the historic centres of our cities ugly, is turning sport into a gambling den, and steals 88 billion euro a year from the economy of those who work honestly. Gambling is the enemy of the common good.

The non-partisan Slot Mob movement has launched the idea of organising collective events of responsible and active citizenship, to reward those bars in our cities that have given up slot machines, VLTs and everything else: a strong no to gambling through celebration, sport as gratuitousness and a joyful encounter.

It’s time to make ourselves heard! The Economy of Francesco is also joining in and proposing a Slot Mob day!

How to organise a SlotMob in your city?

• Network. Involve schools, associations, parishes, friends in your town.
• Choose a gambling-free bar: look for a bar that has removed slot machines. If not, choose one that has never had slot machines.
• Organise an event on July 10th: talk to the bar manager, choose a time and meet everyone for breakfast or an aperitif. Maintaining social distance and wearing masks!
• Microphone or megaphone: invite the mayor of your town or other personalities and prepare a short meeting explaining the meaning and reason for the initiative (see: https://arc.edc-online.org/it/629-it-poverta/it-slotmob.html and https://www.facebook.com/Slotmob)
• Find a football table or table tennis and organise a tournament with all participants! But … any other healthy game is fine, the choice is yours!
• Take lots of photos and selfies with the words “A BAR WITHOUT SLOT MACHINES HAS MORE SPACE FOR PEOPLE”.
• Share on your social networks, tagging #eofslotmob and the bar in the post
• And then …continue to support no-slot machine bars.

Um bar sem slots tem mais espaço para as pessoas

Começa a campanha Slotmob da Economia de Francisco: uma iniciativa de democracia económica e uma forma de protesto civil.

Nos últimos anos, em Itália, nasceu e cresceu na sociedade civil um movimento que apela a uma mudança radical de direcção na actual gestão do jogo, a que se juntam associações, autoridades locais e cidadãos comuns. A razão é clara e evidente: as consequências negativas deste fenómeno, sob o ponto de vista económico, social, sanitário e de planeamento urbano estão à vista de todos. Como todos os fenómenos complexos, a resolução do jogo exige uma reflexão séria para tentar parar o fenómeno, para identificar o centro propulsor de todo o sistema e para tentar desafiá-lo seriamente.

Normalmente a retórica do jogo ilegal é utilizada para promover o jogo “legal”, deixando de lado toda a atenção às consequências que tal atividade produz ao nível social e de saúde e na vida das pessoas. O jogo de azar não é um mero jogo e nunca é bom. Todo o jogo é patológico, tóxico, cria dependência, captura os mais frágeis, consome os pobres para obter lucro, polui os territórios, torna os centros históricos das nossas cidades feios, transforma o desporto num antro de jogo, e tira 88 mil milhões por ano à economia daqueles que trabalham honestamente. O jogo é o inimigo do bem comum.

O movimento Slot Mob – apartidário e apolítico – lançou a ideia de organizar eventos colectivos de cidadania responsável e activa, para recompensar os bares das nossas cidades e comunidades que desistiram das slots, vlt (I don’t know what this is)  e tudo o resto: um forte “não!” ao jogo através da festa, o jogo como um encontro livre e alegre.

É tempo de nos fazermos ouvir! A Economia de Francesco está também a aderir e a propor um dia de Slot Mob!
