For the third Saturday in a row, the international rally “Afghan women exist – Together we stand!” continues, organized throughout Italy by The Economy of Francesco (EoF) in support of Afghan girls and women. The campaign, launched last August 28 by the International Movement of Young Economists and Entrepreneurs – created upon the request of Pope Francis – does not give up and remains faithful to its intention to “repeat the march every Saturday, as long as necessary. The aim is to “mobilize the international community so that it can be up to its task.”
Thousands of people all over Italy, from north to south, gathered again in the public squares on Saturday, September 11, 2021, in a global embrace of Afghan women, who has become the target of the new Taliban government. The latest victims are now the women athletes. In fact, two days ago, the Taliban’s Commission on Culture announced that Afghan women will be banned from practicing sports because it is deemed “unnecessary and inappropriate” as “they would be too visible and this goes against the dress code of Islam. Even if this causes protests, we Talibans will not abandon our values.”
Among the most active cities in Italy is Saronno, in Lombardy, where the initiative of The Economy of Francesco reported, also on this Saturday, an overwhelming presence of citizens who rushed to give their support. “Up to now, 500 people have rallied in this city, every Saturday from 5 to 6 pm, in the very central square “Piazza San Francesco”, and today 200 more have arrived” – says a satisfied Valentina Rotondi, from the EoF Executive Committee and a researcher in Neuroeconomics at the University of Oxford and SUPSI in Lugano. ” This was made possible thanks to the support of various local artists who have rallied for this cause as well as the Association of Amateur Sports “Danzarte” (Dance Art) and the Association “Quattro Passi di Pace” (Four Steps of Peace). This is a collaboration of more than 30 associations based in the area north of Milan and which focus on social inclusivity, peace and sustainable development. Truly, our warmest thanks goes to all of them “.
Among the novelties of this new appointment in support of Afghan women is Chiara Telazzi, a seamstress with a big heart. For weeks she has been sewing a patchwork-style blanket to be given to the Afghan family, soon to arrive from Kabul, who will be hosted at the SOS village in Saronno.
“To remain indifferent is no longer possible and we must raise our awareness. This is the reason for our action: a continuous global march, every Saturday, to express our support, both personal and collective, and our solidarity with the Afghan women and girls. Valentina Rotondi reiterates: “Gathering in the streets and rallying in their favor is not only a gesture in support of the women, but of the entire Afghan society, which was slowly and finally rediscovering the dignity of every person.”
There are also many sit-ins and rallies being organized around the world in countries like Argentina, Guatemala, and Brazil, despite the difficult conditions caused by the Covid emergency. Also Madagascar, Philippines, and Portugal have joined the initiative. “This is why we must continue to wear, every day, a piece of blue cloth, or put it on the windows of our homes, to tell the Afghan women: we are with you, we see you, we hear you,” emphasizes Maria Gaglione, of the secretariat of The Economy of Francesco, which invites to “give visibility and voice to those who are already losing them in the areas of sports, culture, associations, as well as in everyday life.”
