EoF Academy & EoF School in 2024
The Economy of Francesco Academy is a platform aimed at rethinking how the global economy operates, with a focus on exploring new forms of economic governance that balance profit with purpose and address social and environmental challenges. The 46 Fellows are researchers affiliated with universities as PhD students or early career academics, who are matched with Senior Fellows who act as research advisors.
In the past year, Fellows represented 25 countries, with topics ranging from the metaphysics of capital, religion and trust in Europe, multidimensional child poverty in Latin America, and the relationship between paid leave programs and household debt in the United States.
The next cohort of the EoF Academy is scheduled to begin in 2025. Young EoF scholars who are interested in participating in future cohorts of the EoF Academy should check the website in early 2025.
The Economy of Francesco School had an active year between the seminar series and five in-person programs within the EoF Summer School.
First, the fourth edition of the EoF School Seminar series, titled “Capital and Capabilities in the On-Life Era,” had six online lectures focused on the investigation of new and old forms of capital and capabilities. Streamed on the EoF YouTube channel, the Fourth edition of the School aimed to understand how to address global problems such as inequality, discrimination, misery, exclusion and many others.
Speakers addressed the following questions:
What forms of capital do we need to address the problems of the on-life era?
What capabilities are constitutive of the human experience between the real and the digital?
Between March and September, speakers included Angus Deaton, Joanna Bryson, and Flavio Comim, with the final lesson coming from Martha Nussbaum earlier this month. Each session was planned by an Organizing Committee of seven Economy of Francesco members and involved participation from different members of the EoF Academy and larger EoF community in moderators and discussants.
Additionally, there have been five in-person programs for the EoF Summer School over the past few months. Most recently, and co-sponsored by the EoF Academy, earlier this month was the EoF International Summer School in La Verna, Italy titled, “Homo Mendicans: Companionship, Wandering, and the pursuit of Joy.”
