We invite chapter proposals for a forthcoming edited volume on At the Roots of Economic Ethics, inspired by the Economy of Francesco and its Franciscan vision of economy, ethics, ecology, and social responsibility. The volume will bring together original scholarly contributions that examine the moral, spiritual, ecological, and relational foundations of economic life.

This book aims to extend the conversation opened by the At the Roots of Economic Ethics conference held in Assisi (7-9 May 2026), and to deepen reflection on how Franciscan thought can illuminate contemporary economic theory, policy, and practice. We especially welcome contributions that engage themes of justice, solidarity, care, sustainability, poverty, and the common good.

Themes

Contributions may address topics including, but not limited to:

  • Franciscan approaches to economic ethics.
  • Economics, spirituality, and moral responsibility.
  • Integral ecology and the ethics of care for creation.
  • Poverty, inequality, and solidarity.
  • Fraternity, reciprocity, and the common good.
  • Catholic Social Teaching and economic life.
  • Historical and contemporary interpretations of Franciscan economic thought.
  • Interdisciplinary perspectives linking theology, philosophy, economics, and the social sciences.
  • Community, inclusion, disability, and care.
  • Global justice, peace, and alternative economic imaginaries.

Proposal Requirements

Prospective contributors should submit:

  • A chapter title.
  • An abstract of 200–300 words.
  • A short author biography.
  • A brief statement explaining the chapter’s contribution to the volume.

Submissions should be original and unpublished, and should clearly engage with the thematic focus of the book. Preference will be given to those in attendance at the conference.

The volume will be of interest to scholars, students, and practitioners in economics, theology, ethics, philosophy, social thought, development studies, and Franciscan studies, as well as readers interested in alternative economic visions.

Publication Plan

Selected proposals will be invited to submit full chapters for peer review and editorial review. Further details regarding the publisher, timeline, and editorial process will be shared with accepted contributors.
